Jill Scott is the only daughter of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. The family was dominated by her grandmother, and she was an only child. Scott received her education at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following graduating, Scott enrolled into Temple University. In between two job opportunities and studying secondary education, she continued her studies. She wanted to be a high-school English teacher. She was unable to fulfill her dream, however, when after completing three years of study while working as a teacher assistant in college, she decided to leave. She began her career as a spoken word artist performing her own pieces during live poetry readings. She ultimately joined with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. Her first public appearance was as a performer at the Roots Show. After that, she secured collaborations with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. During the Canada tour of the Broadway musical Rent She gained invaluable experiences performing. She was the first artist signed with Hidden Beach Recordings.
